Google has signed an agreement with Italy, which will allow it to scan ancient Italian literary texts.
The agreement is Google’s first publishing agreement with a national government. Google already has such agreements with various libraries, museums, and universities. Google has termed the deal as “groundbreaking”.
According to an Italian Culture Ministry official, the deal is likely to create “hundreds” of local jobs. Google’s President of Global Sales Operations and Business Development, Nikesh Arora, said, “We can balance commercial content with the not-so-commercial-but-very critical content in the long run, It's hard to put a price on comprehensiveness.”
