Here's the closing question and answer session from Cisco Systems Inc's (NASDAQ: CSCO) morning press conference:
Q: Why doesn't Cisco just get into being an internet service provider?
A: "We don't have interest in consumer devices"
Q: How will this new access change life for the consumer?
A: "It really allows us to connect users around the world using a single network design, which is extremely important for scaling."
Q: How much did these developments cost?
A: As of now, CRS-3 has cost $1.6 billion
Q: Will CRS-3 include open architecture?
A: "We will of course be open architecture."
Q: How does this announcement impact Google's recent plan to bring 1GB to every home?
A: "We love anybody who adds loads to networks." Though, they believe they are better at dealing with consumers than Google. Cisco comments their biggest competitors are in China.
Q: How will this change things?
A: Cisco is projecting IP traffic to be five times larger by 2013 and a 6500% growth in mobile traffic- with 90% of this increased traffic being video. Cisco reiterates this growth points to a necessity for this increase in scale.
