Leap Year Glitch Blamed By Sony For PlayStation Woes (SNE)
March 02, 2010 9:28 AM
The glitch that deprived PlayStation users around the world of games yesterday, has been fixed by Sony Corp. (ADR) (NYSE: SNE). The company said that there was a problem in the internal clock of some PS3 consoles. The clock had erroneously read 2010 as a leap year, and added in Feb.29 to the clock. This had led to service outage around the globe, causing concern among avid players.
The glitch dates back to the days of the Y2K problem. However, slim new PS3 consoles were not affected by the glitch. "We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units, other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally," a note on Sony's PlayStation blog reads.
