General Atomics To Develop Portable Nuclear Reactor

General Atomics has announced the launch of a 12-year program to develop an innovative nuclear reactor that could run on used up fuel from big nuclear reactors. General Atomics have now joined the ranks of the companies engaged in constructing reactors small enough to be portable.

However, the ambitious project has several hurdles to cross. The project is likely to run into financial roadblocks. The program is expected to cost about $1.7 billion. It could also face opposition from environment activists and scientists. The Obama administration is planning to the U.S. nuclear sector. The administration recently approved the first loan guarantee for a new nuclear plant.
