Nokia (NYSE: NOK), the world’s largest maker of mobile phones, and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), the world’s foremost chip maker, have announced the merger of their Linux mobile platforms. The new operating system is called MeeGo and is designed to work across a range of devices. Nokia (NOK) said that MeeGo will redefine the traditional mobile OS ecosystem.

The Linux-based new platform will be openly available from the second quarter of this year. MeeGo is a free to use operating system but is expected to aid in boosting the sale of related products such as apps.
