Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) had better brace for some rough weather ahead. In addition to the iPad being reviled for not supporting Flash, it looks like Apple neglected a very basic name check before the launch. Fujitsu (OTC: FJTSY) has claimed ownership of the name “iPad” for its mobile device with a touchscreen display that has been around since 2002.
The name iPad is used for Magtek’s encrypted credit card swiper, by Siemens (NYSE: SI) for its engines and motors, as well as by a Canadian company for a breast-enhancing bra. Magtek had earlier blocked Fujitsu’s attempt to trademark the name in early 2007, but the latter resubmitted the application in June. Apple has until the end of next month to decide whether it will formally contest Fujitsu’s claim to the name.
