In a move that reveals just how much distrust there is towards villain-of-the-year BP (NYSE: BP), the state of Louisiana is demanding that BP make public its claims database for the oil spill.
BP created the database as a way to handle all potential claims filed by fishermen, workers, and other individuals and businesses negatively affected by the oil spill, and now it appears as if the behind-the-scenes decisions on who gets paid what by the British company will be made public.
"Hardworking people should not be forced into poverty by the oil spill," said Curt Eysink, executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. "We need to understand why so many claims have not been paid, some for many weeks."
BP CEO Tony Hayward, recently notorious for his perceived out-of-touch statements, has made statements promising that BP will honor all legitimate claims. What, exactly, constitutes a legitimate claim is the question spurring the recent call to action from Louisiana officials.
