Today on Fox Business Network, Brian Sullivan talked to AOL Co-founder Steve Case and CEO Tim Armstrong about the company's 25th anniversary celebration, the future of AOL, its current business model and the online competition with Google
GOOG
and others, saying "The battle is for attention. There are more companies and it's harder to break through the clutter." Here are some of the highlights of the Fox Business Network interview.
On whether it is harder now to launch online companies:
“It’s a mixed bag. It’s a lot easier to get started now. The battle is for attention. In some ways it’s easier because the platform is there. There are more companies [than 25 years ago] and it’s harder to break through the clutter.”
Armstrong on the company’s ad strategy:
“The first year of the company was really mechanically driven, which was spin the company out of Time Warner, get cost structure straightened out and set the company up in a direction we can be successful. We’re coming through that first phase of that organizational shift. We have now positioned the company to compete with the future of content and advertising space online. We are also fundamentally redoing the tech platforms around advertising and I think we have some very creative, innovative ideas which the world will see over the next year.”
Steve Case on cost cutting and layoffs:
“We have no plans to do future layoffs at this point based on how we do business wise. Our goal is growth. We are looking for talent in the marketplace now.”
Steve Case on where AOL is investing:
“It’s really a mixed bag but the idea is all the same. How do we invest with entrepreneurs and partner with entre to create these iconic companies that could really change the world?”
