We don't want to appear too curmudgeonly, so in the essence of fairness, we decided to follow up our look at five new ETFs that are struggling with a look at five funds that have debuted this year that are off to banner starts.

Average daily volume for all five of these ETFs isn't exceptional, but this quintet has done a fine job of attracting assets. Given the choice between assets under management and volume when determining an ETF's survival prospects, we tend to favor AUM.

Without further ado...

First Trust ISE Cloud Computing Index Fund (Nasdaq: SKYY): SKYY made its debut on July 5th and this first-to-market is enjoying all the advantages first-to-market status affords, having attracted an impressive $52.6 million in AUM. Average daily volume is close to 66,000 shares and with Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) looking pretty good these days (those stocks account for over 8% of SKYY's weight) the sky could be the limit for SKYY.

WisdomTree Asia Local Debt ETF (NYSE: ALD): The chart on the WisdomTree Asia Local Debt ETF is pure carnage, but give the ETF this much credit: It made its debut in March and has attracted $650.7 million in AUM. Average daily volume is above 134,000 and the yield is decent at 2.33%. It may not be a “buy” at the moment, but ALD won't be head to the ETF graveyard anytime soon.

iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Small-Cap Index Fund (NYSE: EEMS): ETFs sponsored by iShares rarely find their way to the ETF dumpster and it doesn't look EEMS will join that dubious club. In barely more than a month of trading, the small-cap equivalent of the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (NYSE: EEM) has garnered over $63 million in AUM. Average daily turnover is decent for a fund this new at over 3,900 shares.

PowerShares Senior Bank Loan Portfolio (NYSE: BKLN): When the PowerShares Senior Bank Loan Portfolio made its debut in March, it could have been argued this was too ETF was too narrowly focused to be a winner. Well, that argument has been proven wron as BKLN has raked in over $159 million in AUM. The expense ratio is high at 0.83%, but BKLN's yield is stout at 4.6%. One of the better new bond ETFs of 2011.

Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (NYSE: VXUS): As is the case with iShares, Vanguard ETFs don't disappear all that often and looking at the stats for the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF shows us this fund is here to stay. AUM: Over $300 million. Total holdings: Over 6,600. Average daily volume: Almost 103,000 shares. Enough said.
