The US government has slapped duties on Chinese pipe imports into the country. The Commerce Department has levied duties of up to 99% on steel pipe imports from that country. This move comes just 15 days ahead of Obama’s China visit. Only recently, Chinese tyre imports faced similar dumping duties.
The Commerce Department’s move to impose duties was welcomed by US’ Steel Makers. FT reports that these steel pipes were used in oil drilling. Between 2006 and 2008, imports of these pipes surged 203%. The duties levied ranged between 36.53% for selected companies to 99.14% for others. Only one producer Jiangsu Changbao Steel Tube Co, was exempted from these duties. For imports arriving into the country, The US Customs will collect cash or bond deposits on the imports depending on the rates decided.
