Mexican telecommunication billionaire Carlos Slim heads the Forbes rich list with a net worth of $53.5 billion. This is the first time in sixteen years that the list has been headed by a non-American.

The Forbes rich list, which is published annually, this year, reflects the growing strength of emerging economies. Slim beat Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to the top. Gates and Buffett have a net worth of $53 billion, and $47 billion, respectively.

The list includes 403 billionaires from the U.S. followed by China with 64 billionaires, and Russia with 62. The others in the list include India’s Mukesh Ambani, who is on the fourth position with a net worth of $29 billion, and Oracle’s (NASDAQ: ORCL) Larry Ellison, who finished sixth with a net worth of $28 billion.
