Violence Erupts In Greece

Violence erupted in Greece on Thursday as an estimated 50,000 people joined in the latest nationwide strike, and protested against the government’s fresh austerity package.

The package, which was announced last week, will further cut government spending, and raise taxes. Greek police fought with youth in street battles by firing tear gas, and percussion grenades at them. Protestors responded by throwing stones, and bottles back at the police, and also smashed shop windows, and set ablaze at least one car.

The country’s two unions, private-sector GSEE, and public-sector ADEDY called the strike to protest the fresh austerity package announced last week.
