6 Degrees Of Self-Driving Separation

The six degrees of separation theory is a theory that each person in the world can be connected to every other person in the world in only six steps. The same theory could easily apply to the self-driving car industry. In fact, all the major players in autonomous driving can be connected in much fewer than six steps.

Here’s a look a just some of the many branches of the autonomous driving family tree.

General Motors Company GM spun off Delphi Automotive PLC DLPH back in 1999. This week, Delphi and Mobileye announced a new partnership to develop a self-driving system.

Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL and Ford Motor Company F have teamed with ridesharing startup Uber to tackle the regulatory hurdles that self-driving cars may face.

GM invested $500 million in Uber rival Lyft earlier this year. The two companies plan on working together to develop an on-demand self-driving car network.

Tesla Motors Inc TSLA recently terminated its partnership with Mobileye, but it continues to partner with NVIDIA Corporation NVDA to develop an autonomous car platform.

Alphabet and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV FCAU have partnered up to create a fleet of 100 self-driving minivans to collect data that will be crucial in fine-tuning an autonomous driving system.
