Far from being the most pressing issue of our time, the
Wall Street Journal
investigated why many
McDonald's CorporationMCD
customers are unable to order a McFlurry.

WSJ highlighted the story of an 18-year college student named Matt Laliberte who returns to a McDonald's location time and time again for a delicious ice cream treat. However, each time around he leaves disappointed as on nearly every occasion, the ice cream machine is out of service.

3 Purveying Theories

Theories are circulating across social media sites that many times the ice cream machines are working just fine but the employees don't want to make the snack. Other theories include the idea that a location doesn't actually sell ice cream and uses the broken machine as an excuse.

The real reason may be a combination of all the various theories. McDonald's policies dictate that ice cream machines receive a nightly automated heat cleaning cycle, which can last up to four hours to kill any bacteria that may have accumulated during the day.

WSJ quoted Sarah Vaught, a former shift manager at a McDonald's location in Carmi, Illinois, who said that the cleaning process is in reality long and tedious and involves 11 different steps.

The problem grows even deeper when considering the fact that many McDonald's stores are open 24 hours so the lengthy cleaning process has to be completed at a time when clients could walk in and order a McFlurry.

In fact, the most common complaint among McDonald's customers on Twitter is related to broken ice cream machines and even exceeds poor employee attitudes.

"Everything about the machine is just miserable," Courtney Bunting, another McDonald's employee summed up how many think.
