Wal-Mart Once Pulled 'Woman President' T-Shirts Because It Offended Family Values

Twenty years ago it may have been "offensive" for a company to sell a t-shirt proclaiming that someday a woman will be president. That company happens to be Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. WMT.

Back in 1995, a Wal-Mart store had to pull the t-shirt after one customer complained. According to the Tuscaloosa News, a Wal-Mart spokesperson said, "it was determined the t-shirt was offensive to some people and so the decision was made to pull it from the sales floor."

Flash forward more than 20 years, and Hillary Clinton officially became on Tuesday the first woman in U.S. history to win the presidential nomination of a major party. Ironically enough, Clinton was also a member of Wal-Mart's board of directors from 1986 to 1992.

On Wednesday, Wal-Mart released a statement:

“It still pains us that we made this mistake 20 years ago. We’re proud of the fact that our country – and our company – has made so much progress in advancing women in the workplace, and in society.”

Not The First Female Elected Head Of State

Should Clinton win the presidential race against the Republican nominee Donald Trump, she would join a small but growing list of women who serve as an elected head of state.

Margaret Thatcher was the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century from 1979 to 1990. She was the country's first women to have held the top office and the only one to do so until Theresa May was named Prime Minister in July of this year.

Kim Campbell served as the 19th Prime Minister of Canada in 1993 and was considered to be the most popular prime minister in 30 years.

There are currently more than 20 female head of states, including Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, South Korea's President Park Geun-hye, and Switzerland's President Simonetta Sommaruga.
