Who hasn't read “Dilbert”?

Scott Adams, the creator of the glossy-eyed, plain-as-day office worker from the famed comic strips, recently sat down with Benzinga partner James Altucher. In the interview, Adams detailed everything from his personal failings, to his book, "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big."

In particular, Adams discussed the book's level of success.

“It hasn't gotten nearly the public acceptance that I had hoped,” he said, “but the small groups of people that are reading it seem pretty excited about it.”

Claiming the book is in the old-fashioned “self-help” genre, Adams remarked that many of these works tend to disappoint because people read them expecting their lives to be changed automatically. Self-help books, however, are more useful for readers to learn about themselves, Adams explained.

The Dilbert creator and Altucher also had a general discussion about success and failure. After hundreds of failed ideas, one is bound to work, Adams said.

“Do things that improve your odds in a fairly general way,” he remarked, adding: “So that no matter what the future looks like, you're in a good position to take advantage of it… If you just put yourself in a position where the odds are better, you can't predict exactly how the odds will turn out, but it's probably a better position.”
