For all of our investors, the summer can be an amazing time to kick back with friends and family. But, spending those special days and making memories with the people you love don’t necessarily mean you need to put any extra strain on your wallet. Remember, your goal should be to maximize your summer fun while minimizing your total costs. We know this is probably not a constant thought running through your mind all summer long, though; so, to help you out a little, we’ve compiled a list of 8 easy (and even fun!) ways for you to save some extra funds this summer!

1. Check for discount coupons before you go

Lots of people use the summer to travel or make day trips to new places. But, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all and forget to check for savings before making trips. This summer, remember that competition between travel destinations is huge. Lots of airlines, restaurants, and hotels end up running sales during certain weeks of the summer. So, be sure to check sites like this to see if you’re really getting the best deals on your travel plans. Then, once your travel is all booked, make sure to check and plan your trip out, so you can take advantage of free museum days, restaurant specials, and discounted concert tickets!

Plus, if you’re a student, don’t forget the variety of student discounts you can take using your student ID! You can find a list of those discounts here.

2. Unplug, unplug, unplug!

When the weather is this nice, people usually don’t like spending so much time inside. So, why have all of your devices plugged in while you’re not going to be using them, anyway? Take an hour to walk around your house and unplug everything that you know you won’t be using – especially if you’re going on vacation or planning to spend the whole day outdoors. Many savvy savers even temporarily cancel their cable subscriptions over the summer, because they find themselves not watching the TV, even when they are home!

3. Get a garden going

If you like spending time outdoors, you might want to get a little garden started up in your yard. Here is a good list of the best crops to plant during each month of the year. Pretty soon, you could be saving big on your grocery bills! Plus, this might be a fun way to spend a day outdoors with your family!

4. Cook in the morning

Air conditioning bills can get pretty pricey in the summer months and heating up the house during the peak of the day’s heat will only encourage you to dial up the AC more. As a result, many people have started to counteract their desire to blast the AC by cooking in the morning, before it gets really hot outside. This way, you give your house a chance to cool down before it gets hot outside. Plus, you can prepare your food for the whole day and sit inside at a comfortable temperature without breaking the bank!

5. Fire up the grill

To add onto the last idea, grilling is a great way to cook your summer food without heating up the house! Buy some meat in bulk and come up with some creative grilling recipes to eat well and save yourself from the heat. Also keep in mind that you can grill more than just meat – start with some veggies and fruits to put a new twist on your summer dinners!

6. Stock snacks and drinks in bulk

Summer time means lots of light snacks and staying hydrated. But, you can always save by stocking up in bulk! Then, you can even try fun iced tea and lemonade recipes with water from home to cut down on buying bottled drinks!

7. Have a picnic!

Want to eat out with the family? Go on a picnic! Get the whole family involved in making food, grab a big blanket, and bring your favorite outdoor games! This is a fun way to have a “night out” and can save you the money on just another night out to eat. Plus, for our younger investors, this could be a fun way to hang out with friends or take someone special out for a date!

8. Open the windows at night

For most of us, the temperature will drop at night and it may not even make sense to run the air conditioning while we sleep. If you have the chance, try opening the windows and shutting off the AC at night. Then, close the windows and the blinds when you get up in the morning to try and keep the cool air in for as long as possible. You might be surprised how much you can save by shutting off the AC for even a few extra hours each day!

As summer gets closer and closer, it’s time to start planning the best ways to maximize experiences and minimize expenses. Of course, these options can be just the beginning to your creative saving habits! Just keep in mind: the more you plan, the more you can save. The more you save, the more you can invest!
