Tuesday's trading session greeted shareholders of Second Sight Medical Products Inc EYES with news that the company has successfully implanted and activated a wireless visual cortical stimulator in a human subject.

The patient was able to perceive individual spots of light with no significant adverse side effects. Dr. Nader Pouratian, the neurosurgeon who performed the surgery, added, "Based on these results, stimulation of the visual cortex has the potential to restore useful vision to the blind."

At time of writing, Second Sight shares were trading 17 percent higher at $3.32.
