United Airlines Follows Suit with Baggage Fee Increase
January 13, 2010 4:01 PM
United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA) followed Delta (NYSE: DAL) and Continental (NYSE: CAL) with an increase in baggage fees.
United plans to charge $25 for the first checked baggage and $35 for the second, an increase of $5. These new fees will be enforced as of January 21st.
These new prices are the same as checking bags at both other airlines mentioned above; however, passengers can get a few dollars off by paying ahead of time for the bags that will be checked for the flight.
So far American Airlines has not increased their fees, but more than likely will follow suit in the near future. Southwest (NYSE: LUV) still does not charge for the first two pieces of checked luggage. I do not suspect Southwest's stance on checked luggage to change in the near future due to the marketability and company core values.
