Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) has decided to lead the fight against video game pirates by zapping a key feature in 1 million outlawed Xboxes, to be replaced with new consoles. The company believes these units of Xbox were illegally modified to be able to run pirated software from its gaming site, Xbox Live. Using modified consoled, users can avoid paying $40 and above for games on Xbox Live.

The strategy to catch culprits was timed along with the release of the new game: ‘Call of Duty” Modern Warfare 2”. By terminating the 1 million consoles, the company has prevented sales loss of $65 million from annual sales of Modern Warfare 2 which is being projected to be $800 million. The company also plans to permanently expel pirates from Xbox Live which costs $50 per annum to access. Microsoft Corporation was swamped by calls on the banned Xbox, but firmly responded that the bans were irreversible.
