Deduct Haiti Support from 2009 Taxes

Share

Many people around the country supported the Haiti relief efforts after the devastating earthquake. Do not forget to deduct your support from your 2009 taxes.

The Senate passed a bill allowing deductions for the 2009 tax year for those who supported Haiti relief efforts. Obama will likely sign this bill into law over the next week, making it official.

As with all deductions, expect rules. First, you must have contributed between January 11th and March 1st. Second, texted donations will count as long as a bill from your company denotes the donation was made during the specified dates.

The most important thing is for you to always keep receipts of charitable donations if you wish to obtain a tax deduction for your contribution. Keep your eye out for the official passing of this bill and remember your donations when you file your 2009 taxes.
