Lean hogs leaner, make new hot summer highs
Trading commodity futures and options involves substantial risk of loss and may not be suitable for all investors. You should carefully consider whether trading is suitable for you in light of your circumstances, knowledge and financial resources.
It's been a hot summer already. And for the mighty hog, which has no functional sweat glands, it's been even hotter. Generally hogs don't do well when it's hot outside and are unable to pack on the pounds to reach their optimal maximum weight.
Lean Hogs today (7/28) made new highs for this summer and pork demand appears to be much better than traders expected. Hot weather in the Midwest is expected to limit the amount brought to market, which makes packers more aggressive in their buying. In addition exports appear active, and traders expect continued tight supply ahead.
On the daily charts I have received a buy signal for the lean hogs with both the 9 and 20 day simple moving averages pointing up.
