According to MarketWatch, the iShares Dow Jones US Home Construction Index fund (ETF) (NYSE: ITB) was the top performing fund year-to-date with a return of 8.7%. SPDR S&P Homebuilders (ETF) (NYSE: XHB) was up 4.3% for the same period.

The SPDR S&P Homebuiders fund has $800 million in assets, and is more liquid in terms of share trading volume. Builder ETFs are particularly risky as the US emerges from the worst recession since the Great Depression.

The outperformance of builder ETFs is surprising given the high unemployment rate, and the stalling of housing market again. Investors look to these funds for a sign of recovery in the housing market.
