The New Zealand subsidiary of information technology company Unisys Corporation (UIS) has been chosen by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to pilot the upgrade of its national Crash Analysis System (“CAS”).

Unisys will act as the prime system integrator under the six-year contract, and will devise and install an upgraded version of the CAS based on an open platform. The open platform will be flexible and will enable integration with other departments, agencies and systems.

For the project, Unisys has collaborated with transportation solutions leader Intergraph, which will assist in screening complex data. Unisys also partnered with mapping specialist e-Spatial for online mapping tools.

The CAS will be hosted in Unisys' Auckland data center. The solution will be delivered through a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) model within a private cloud environment. The company will also offer service desk support.

In New Zealand, approximately 30,000 road accidents are reported annually, one-third of which involve injuries. The New Zealand Government is attempting to improve road safety through its Safer Journeys initiative, and hopes to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents.

To achieve the government's objective, the Transport Agency's CAS will leverage mobile technology to record the data electronically at the scene of the accident. CAS will then analyze the captured information to figure out the factors and trends that led to the accident, such as road curvature or high speed. Unisys will automate the input, sharing and analysis of the captured critical data.

Upgrade and automation of CAS will help the Transport Agency to assess and prioritize modifications to road conditions in order to reduce the probability of future crashes. Moreover, integration of the system with other entities will facilitate more comprehensive and relevant big data analysis.

The CAS contract enhances Unisys' association with the Transport Agency. Unisys recently modernized its Driver and Vehicle Registry System.

Unisys currently has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Other stocks in the information technology services industry that are worth a look include EPAM Systems, Inc. (EPAM) and EarthLink Holdings Corp. (ELNK), both carrying the same rank as Unisys, and Infosys Ltd. (INFY), carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
