New Research Shows Apple Working Heavily On Machine Learning Before WWDC 2016

The annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) for 2016 will be held by Apple Inc. AAPL in San Francisco, California.

Ahead of the event, Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research attended three events that provided an overview on Apple.

"We recently attended NVDA GPU Conference, Data Science Conference and attended Deep Learning Hackathons," Chowdhry shared. "We spoke to about 250 people."

Key Takeaways

Chowdhry outlined four broad "messages" to be aware of regarding Apple:

  • 1)"Apple has significant ongoing effort in Machine Learning (ML) services, which will very likely be unveiled during WWDC'2016;
  • 2) "APPL ML Infrastructure is using AMZN (Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN AWS and iCloud – Training Model is on AWS – Validation on iCloud and deployment on iCloud;
  • 3) "Apple is buying NVDA (NVIDIA Corporation NVDA Chips at the same rate as Google (Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL for its GPU Cloud, which indicates APPL ML effort is significant;
  • 4) "Jonathan Cohen, who came from NVDA, seems to be playing a critical role at AAPL."

Significant Focus On Machine Learning

Chowdhry elaborated upon Apple's ML advances, "Apple is creating ML Services based on Caffe Deep Learning Framework, built on CUDA (Barracuda Networks Inc CUDA)libraries. Apple is also using Scikit learn, and Apple ML will use Apple built-in visualization in Swift language. This is another proof point that DATA (Tableau), has zero play in ML, as every ML vendor builds their own Visualization in their platform (emphasis omitted)."

Chowdhry then postulated what the ML services for Apple may include, from maps and music apps to games and messaging apps and a "sentiment classifier," and explained that he expects some of Apple's ML services to become live at the WWDC event.

The analyst also outlined a new acquisition in ML for Apple, Emotient, which "is expected to be targeted towards the enterprises." "Apple is also expected to open the Emotient API's within All Apple SDKs (iPhone, iPad, Watch and TVOS SDK's), so that developers can create their own ML Services on top of Emotient."

In concluding his overview, Chowdhry mentioned that Global Equities Research still has more research regarding Machine Learning and Deep Learning, which will be shared at a later time.
