Universal's 'Jurassic World' Devours 'Ted 2' As 'Inside Out' Remains Strong

Dinosaurs have officially taken over the box office now that Universal Studios' "Jurassic World" led another weekend at No. 1.

"Ted 2," the sequel to Seth MacFarlane's comedy hit, opened a bit below the $54.4 million tally enjoyed by the original. The full box office results haven't been released, but the weekend estimates indicate that "Ted 2" earned $33 million over the weekend.

"'Ted 2' was placed in the unenviable position of having to live up to the box office performance, originality and shock value of the first 'Ted,'" Rentrak Corporation RENT Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Benzinga. "The charm and fun of the original film fueled solid word-of-mouth and thus solid box office."

"Jurassic World," now in its third week, earned an estimated $54.2 million, which is nearly on par with "Ted's" debut in 2012.

"Things did not come so easy for the second installment," said Dergarabedian. "Not only did 'Ted 2' get a drubbing from the critics, it entered a box office marketplace that is currently dominated by an outsized performance by Universal's own 'Jurassic World' and continued strength by Pixar's 'Inside Out.'"

"Ted 2" might have underperformed in theaters, but Dergarabedian thinks the film could provide Universal with "nice returns" via streaming, on-demand rentals and DVD sales.

'Fan And Critical Favorite'

Dergarabedian said that Walt Disney Co's DIS "Inside Out" is "clearly a fan and critical favorite, drawing raves across the board for its inventive and perfectly executed premise that is becoming a global phenomenon that is playing to audiences of all ages."

He noted that the film dropped a "mere" 42.4 percent from its opening weekend haul, producing the "second biggest second weekend performance ever for a Pixar film." The champion is still "Toy Story 3," which earned $110.3 million during its first weekend and $59.3 million during its second weekend.

"The film is a juggernaut and has the potential to be one of Pixar's top two grossing films of all-time," Dergarabedian added.

Is Mike Still Magical?

More sequels are headed to cinemas this week with the return of "Terminator" and "Magic Mike."

"The female audience is strong," Tigress Financial Partners analyst Ivan Feinseth told Benzinga. "My guess is that the character and movie is…playing itself out."

Feinseth said that "Magic Mike" has a "solid niche audience of women" but noted that it is a "fickle audience." He said that these kinds of movies, as well as comedies like "Ted 2," cannot "match the power of the action/adventure." And that genre is currently dominated by "Jurassic World."
