Four Tech Stories JPMorgan's Rod Hall Is Watching

In a report published Tuesday, JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall detailed four tech related stories he is following.

Hall speculated that the departure of the two executives was likely if they didn't get promoted as Chief Executive Officer. Both individuals played "important" roles at the company so their departure will create some "short term turmoil" but the longer term impact is unlikely to be material. In addition, Hall cited Business Insider who reported that Padmasree Warrior is also departing her role as the Chief Technology Officer – a "surprising" move as the analyst didn't realize she had been actively seeking the CEO title.

announced that George Kurian has been appointed as the company's Chief Executive Officer and also appointed to the company's Board of Directors. The company's lead independent director Mike Nevens has been elected as Chairman of the Board. The shuffle follows the departure of Tom Georgens, the company's former CEO and Chairman. Hall noted that he doesn't Kurian very well and is "surprised" at NetApp's "apparent mis-execution" during a "critical" phase of technology competition.

Hall suggested that

won't be announcing a new subscription TV service next week during its WWDC conference. The analyst continued that Apple told network executives the unveiling of the new service will be postponed because it has yet to finalize local TV licensing deals, and that this news isn't surprising given the "complexity of the content negotiations." Nevertheless, Hall is expecting a new Apple TV hardware and a related app store offering at WWDC.

Finally, Hall detailed that Apple is reportedly expected to announce a new set of music service that will compete directly with Spotify,

and traditional broadcast stations. Citing The Wall Street Journal, Hall suggested that Apple is prepared to "cannibalize its download business in favor of streaming. The analyst argued that such a strategy is "defensive" given the "beating" Apple's download music business has suffered at the hands of streaming. Hall also stated that a music streaming service from Apple won't result in any "major" earnings contributions but does create the opportunity for cross marketing products like Beats headphones and other Apple products.
