Apple Inc.'s AAPL release of its latest smartphone could boost total September retail sales of electronics and related merchandise, according to an analyst.
Apple said Monday it sold more than 10 million units from Friday through Sunday -- an amount in line with Wall Street's expectations.
J.P. Morgan economist Michael Feroli said comparable product releases in 2010 through 2012 correlated with higher US retail sales in the month of release.
"We would not be surprised to see another boost to retail spending in the September retail sales report," Feroli told TheStreet.com Tuesday.
The report suggested several companies could benefit from a surge.
Electronic Arts Inc. EA, which may gain customers if more smartphone users turn to the devices for their gaming needs, is one potential winner.
Aftermarket accessory makers like Zagg Inc. ZAGG and Logitech International SA LOGI are two others.
