TDS Telecom – a wholly owned subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems Inc. TDS – has announced the launch of a new cloud-based back-up service – TDS Backup Online.

Notably, TDS Backup Online can be used on up to five PCs simultaneously and is accessible from anywhere. Further, the service will offer data storage of up to 200 GB. Through this, customers will be able to promptly retrieve, arrange and share files or folders and automatically back up files.

The service will be priced at $5.95 per month and can also be purchased as part of a money-saving Plus Pack.

The company asserts that with 200 GB of storage, customers will be able to store about 100,000 pictures, 50,000 MP3 files, or around 20 high-definition movies. Meanwhile, mobile applications for iOS and Android operating systems will be added to TDS Backup Online in early 2016.

Notably, in Sep 2014, TDS Telecom launched a personal cloud service – younited by F-Secure. The service is available on mobile devices and is accessible everywhere. The launch of younited has boosted the market share for Telephone and Data Systems and has also helped the company expand cloud services in the retail segment, beyond the conventional enterprise market.

Meanwhile, Telephone and Data Systems is experiencing strong smartphone demand at its wireless wing – United States Cellular Corp. USM. Further, the segment is expected to record strong results owing to increased handset offerings, shared data plans, equipment financing and expansion of LTE technology.

In third-quarter 2015, total revenue at the TDS Division came in at $299.4 million, up 9.6% year over year. By providing a new cloud-based storage service, TDS Telecom aims to create an add-on revenue stream to arrest churn and draw new broadband customers.

Telephone and Data Systems currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in this sector include Ruckus Wireless, Inc. RKUS and AT&T, Inc. T. While Ruckus Wireless sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), AT&T carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
