Peru Votes for 10-Year Ban on GMOs

In the world of genetically modified foods, it is rare to find a country or nation that has not been over-run with genetic contamination.  In the United States, the vast majority of all corn and soy is either intentionally engineered or has been contaminated.  Countless small farmers have gone bankrupt due to contamination of their corn crops and the subsequent lawsuits from Monsanto that quickly follow.  Large parts of Mexico continue to lose family heirloom varieties due to passing trucks dropping GE kernals on the sides of roads or pollen blowing in the wind from adjacent GMO fields.

But there are a few safe(r) havens for quality food.  Germany is one of the leaders in this field, banning or requiring labeling on GMO products; the UK - only due to consumer demand and a grassroots effort – requires labeling; but now Peru joins that crowd.  Peru's Plenary Session of Congress enacted a ten-year moratorium on genetically modified crops in open defiance to the previous government administration's pushes for legalization and embracement of GMOs.

Sadly, Peru's neighbor, Brazil, has welcomed genetically modified foods with open arms, leading to scores of GMO crops being distributed worldwide.  A recent study conducted by the Peruvian Associaion of Consumers and Users, a non-profit organization that promotes and defends the rights of consumers, discovered the presence of genetically modified ingredients in approximately 77% of typical supermarket products in Peru.  And while Peruvian consumers are still faced with a similar threat to their health as shoppers in the United States, at least locally grown foods down there will not, by law, be able to use GMO products.  That is a huge step to preserving their future ability to produce quality crops, avoid superweeds and with a bit of education, instill healthy eating choices for it's citizens while improving its own local economy.

Hayden's Note:

This move lends even more credibility to the fact that GMO foods present a clear and present danger to human health, enough so that an entire nations – several nations, in fact – have outright banned them.  GMOs have been linked to sterility, spontaneous abortions, various reproductive issues in both men and women, kidney and liver damage, cancer and more.

Anibal Huerta, President of Peru's Agrarian Commission, stated that the ban was necessary to prevent the “danger that can arise from the use of biotechnology.”  At least someone in a position of governmental authority is willing to admit the truth about GMOs, mainly that they contaminate the food supply with untested “Franken-genes,” put an immense chemical burden on the environment, and are implicated in a wide variety of disorders and illnesses.

He and the many other congressmen who supported the moratorium also cited agricultural biodiversity as another reason why GMOs needed to be banned. Biotech crops, of course, are responsible for replacing formerly diverse, self-sustaining agricultural systems with endless fields of GM crops like corn and soybeans.

“There is an increasing consensus among consumers that they want safe, local, organic fresh food and that they want the environment and wildlife to be protected,” wrote Walter Pengue from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, in a recent statement concerning GMOs in South America. “South American countries must proceed with a broader evaluation of their original agricultural policies and practices using the precautionary principle.” – http://www.naturalnews.com/032803_Peru_GMOs.html
