Proteins and hormones extracted from a pig bladder were injected into an injured leg to rebuild muscle lost to shrapnel. Researchers at the Univ. of Pittsburgh inserted the mixture, which draws stem cells to a damaged area, into a Marine who lost 70% of his right-thigh muscles. His leg has since grown in bulk and regained most of its strength.
