Following several past reports that the next-generation iPhone will be released this September, drifting away from its regular June/July update timeframe, 9to5Mac has received a tip that this date still stands internally at Apple. According to the report, the iPhone 5, which is what we're calling it but isn't the official name, has reached the final testing phase and is being carried around by top Apple and carrier executives.

Also, the report briefly touches on the fact that Apple and Verizon are still working on a deal that would allow FaceTime to be used over 3G on the Verizon network. Since the source only mentions Verizon, we can assume that a deal has already been made with AT&T to allow FaceTime over 3G, something that has been promised in the past by Apple.

Finally, the report claims that Apple and Verizon are still working out some “kinks” regarding the over-the-air software updates that will be coming in iOS 5, hinting that this feature may be carrier-specific to start off with.
